The original blog entry has been removed.
The main purpose of my blog is to discuss K12 math in general with an emphasis on
- the role of axiomatics and pure math in K12
- updates about my personal interest in the "theory" behind math
- a log of my 12 yo son's successes and failures at proving theorems.
If you are interested in a discussion about content in math my latest blog entry on that issue is here and I invite you to comment on how your algebra program addreses the particular issue that's being brought up.
My site meter was showing me that this link was getting disturbingly high number of hits and I don't want this post to degenerate into yet another interent thread of "skimmers, those who cannot read but only read-in. The sophists who, abusing argument, argue for the sake of argument. The ideologues, those who are out for power, not truth. The uncivil. The illogical. The politically correct. Worst of all, perhaps, are those who exemplify the anti-Socratic property: those who think they know what they don't know."

Well, I just did a search on Amazon for the book, *Norsk Strikkendesign*which contains the pattern for the coat that I love. And found that it was

It was an interesting thread and I thought a few missed the point completely. Math is supposed to be challenging. If it's not making your head hurt a little bit, you're doing it wrong.
I thought I was mathy until CWP 3. I did well in school and CC. I was also of the mindset that since dd was doing so well in math that we would shoot right through Singapore and into algebra. After reading your blog for however long I've been reading it, I've slowed down the pace. I picked up some CWP 3 to use with 4A/4B and some IP. She is being challenged now. She's complaining. It's great.
But, she doesn't hate it. She likes that her dad and I have to figure it out as well.

There may be something to the fact that both you and your husband are really personally involved and concerned about the subject matter that is helping your daughter. It helps to have role models.
Do you have any experience with Video Text? I'm torn between Foerster, Dolciani, and VT for algebra/geometry. Do you know if VT is as rigorous and proofy?
I don't have any experience with Video Text.
If you want to know if it's rigorous you could email the author and ask him what theorems and proofs appear in his algebra text.
Hey there. I have been looking at the Teaching Textbooks program and happened upon your blog. My son is going into 6th grade, we have been using the Horizons math program and have completed Math 5. When I looked at the Teaching Textbooks curriculum I could easily tell that with his current knowledge he would test into Math 7 or Pre-Algebra. My reason for considering it is this. He doesn't like math (not that he has to), and still struggles with quick recall of basic facts. The Teaching Textbooks method starts with basics every year and that intrigued me. Math is not my strong point and when it gets to hard for me, he's going to a tutor. I was thinking of Teaching Textbooks as basics back-up before he ends up with the tutor in HS. As someone whose strength IS in math, what are the pro's and con's you can see with this plan? MB - who doesn't want to type this over again in order to set up an account.
I have a child going into 10th grade who used Saxon in 7th and 8th grade and TT in 9th. In my experience, the TT is much more helpful with explanations and having a solutions CD that details every single problem is really wonderful. It's easier to use and is easier to get my son to do. We will continue with it this year as he scored in the 99th percentile on his math SATS too. There might be a better curriculm than TT for math, but I haven't found it. Only anonymous because I'm lazy!

The claim of high SAT scores can be found on the publishers website as well.
If there is a publisher out there that does NOT make that claim I haven't found it.
If anyone is interested in yet more discussion as far as content in algebra programs in general, here is my blog entry on that, it's a discussion about the content of NEM--why we do NOT use it.

I don't have any experience or knowledge with Video text either. I hope you can show me how to used. Isn't a bad topic but, there's something hide, maybe the real discussion.
I will have been studying the discuss early in the morning... I definitely love the way like you redact this useful information, most of my students are happy and you know what? so do I. This blog is one of my favorites, I can't ignore my happiness now.
I cannot believe that you are talking about my favorite lessons when I was in the high school!
